Cold Sore Treatment

Cold sore treatment success is very limited. There is no cure for cold sores. The cold sore virus is very contagious at all stages, even when no symptoms are present. However, cold sores are the most contagious when they break open and fluid oozes out. At best, cold sore treatments mainly help to relieve the symptoms.

Cold sores can spread to other people through kissing when people are completely unaware that they may have the cold sore virus, as most people are, and when no symptoms are present. Cold sore treatment does not prevent the virus from spreading. Cold sores can spread to other parts of your body, especially the genital area, and can likewise spread to other people like a plague even through skin contact particularly when there are cold sore blisters present. Cold sores can spread by sharing things that touch the lips and skin around them, such as towels, lip balm, toothpaste, toothbrush, cups, or utensils, shavers, etc. Prevention is more important than cold sore treatment. Some people think that cold sore treatment protects them and other people from the cold sore virus. This is not true.

There is no cure for the herpes simplex virus and cold sore treatment only reduces symptoms. Once you have the cold sore virus, it stays in your body. You cannot totally prevent cold sore outbreaks even when using a cold sore treatment. However, you can only reduce how often cold sores appear and how long they last with a cold sore treatment like antiviral medication, etc. These are most effective if used before the blisters form, like as soon as you notice any tingling sensations.

Antiviral medication limits the virus's ability to grow. Antiviral cold sore treatments allow the body to fight the virus faster. However, most cold sore treatments do not help to make the virus less contagious and antiviral cold sore treatment can also enable the virus to obtain resistance.

Some common antiviral medications are:

  • Denavir ointment
  • Acyclovir (Zovirax) pill or ointment, drawbacks - possible pregnancy effects and the herpes virus develops resistance.
  • Famvir pills
  • Valtrex pills
