More than half of American young people are infected with oral herpes simplex virus or cold sores (percentage of those infected increasing with age usually due to kissing). There is no cure for cold sores. Cold sores (fever blisters) appear on the mouth, hands, and various other parts of the body. Most people don't even know that they have the cold sore virus. The plague-like spread of the cold sore virus is largely due to misinformation and the irresponsible, 'romantic' glorification of mouth-to-mouth kissing in movies, tv, and other media, and even other health websites.

Cold sores are very contagious and can be passed from one person to another through kissing or other intimate physical contact without either person knowing that they have the disease. An innocent kiss on the mouth between parent and child could be a fatal kiss. It serves little purpose to ask someone if they have oral herpes before kissing or intimate contact since blisters do not even need to be present for you to get the cold sore disease.

Cold sores cause irritating, painful, oozing, highly infectious skin lesions. If the cold sore virus HSV-1 spreads to the brain it can cause herpes encephalitis possibly leading to brain damage, dementia, or death.^[2] Research has established that the cold sore virus is found in 90% of amyloid plaques found in patients' brains.^[1] Cold sores can also lead to cognitive deficits like bipolar disorder.^[3] The cold sore virus can spread to the eyes causing ocular herpes (keratitis) which can lead to blindness.^[4] In addition, eyebrow waxing can promote herpes keratitis from cold sores.

The truth is that the best way to prevent cold sores is by not kissing or having any intimate physical contact until marriage and by not sharing eating utensils, towels, lip balm, shavers, etc.
